Some of the most important skills a retail salesperson can develop are their visual merchandising skills. A creative and skilled retailer can use the art of visual merchandising to breathe new life into a store and the products therein.

So what is visual merchandising? Visual merchandising is the art of presenting products in an aesthetically pleasing fashion, presenting them in a way that makes people want to purchase the product(s) on display.

In many retail establishments, visual merchandising consists not only of the presentation of items on the store shelves themselves, but also on displays such as window displays, counter displays, main aisle tables, end-caps (the displays on either end of an aisle), and special showcase displays such as armoires and feature walls.

There are a number of visual merchandising tricks. Below, you’ll find a few.

Color:

Color is one of the most powerful tools in the visual merchandising toolbox and should be used to full advantage. Colors can be associated with emotions, seasons, holidays, special occasions and gender, among other things. What Halloween display would be complete without orange and black or what Christmas display without red and green (or, alternatively, silver and gold)?

Using color, you can evoke a theme with even the most generic of items. Take towels, for example. Is it possible to create a Valentine’s Display using only towels? Sure. Although towels are never going to be the most romantic of display items, by choosing rich red towels and mixing them with pinks and whites, you can certainly evoke the mood of the holiday, particularly if you have the opportunity to cross-merchandise with such items as heart-shaped soaps and scented bath beads.

Someone looking for a baby gift would certainly be drawn to a display that’s done entirely in pink and blue, because these colors — even without any help — speak to the customer, telling them a tale about the display before they’ve even studied the products.

Signage:

Sometimes specific signage is required, sent down from a corporate office. But if not, signage is equally important to the display, both in wording and visuals. Don’t skimp on color, even for signs. And sometimes, even when particular signs are mandatory, it pays to ask. I found that often if I promised to keep the integrity of the wording, my manager would give me free reign to reprint signs using my own choice of fonts, colors and graphics.

With the variety of easy-to-use publishing software available these days, creating your own signage is simple. Programs such as Microsoft Publisher, Print Shop, Microsoft PictureIt! Publishing, etcetera, are simple to learn, and come with an extensive selection of graphics and font choices. Even word processing software can be easily used to create signs and banners. With a simple change of font, color, and font size, you can make an eye-catching sign.

Themes:

It’s vital to have themes for your displays. Random is a no-no in the visual merchandising world. Your displays should speak to your customer.

Themes can be simple. A theme can be simply sale items in similar categories — bath items, for example. Themes can also be as specific as you’d like.

Themes capture people’s imaginations. Themes can be whimsical, practical, romantic or wacky. Themes are only limited by your imagination and creativity.

Don’t be afraid to be bold with themes. Dare to be different. For example, a display of mystery books is great, but a display of mystery books that feature cats prominently, makes for a much more creative display.

Cross merchandising:

Try using merchandise from different areas of the store if possible. Displays present a wonderful opportunity to introduce shoppers to areas of the store that they might not have ventured into otherwise. If you’re doing a display of gardening items, go ahead and include hand creams geared specifically toward gardeners, books on gardening, or children’s toys such as butterfly nets or bug catchers.

Cleanliness:

Something too easily overlooked, cleanliness is the foundation of a good display. Wood should be dusted and polished. Plexiglass holders need to be washed on a regular basis, and shelves should be dusted and/or wiped down.

Don’t forget to replace broken display pieces. Nothing ruins a beautiful display like a cracked plexiglass sign holder.

Neatness:

Neatness goes hand in hand with cleanliness. Customers pick through displays, and this is a good thing. You want hands to touch your merchandise. Someone who picks an item up to examine is much more likely to put it in their cart and purchase it. So be sure to straighten your displays on a regular basis, neatening stacks and refolding items that require folding.

For stackable items, forming a pyramid is recommended, with the highest piles in the center and shorter piles radiating out in order of height.

Change is good:

Change displays often. Don’t forget about your regular customers, the ones that come in faithfully week after week. Changing displays often can spark new interest in your products for those people who are in the store on a regular basis.

Teamwork:

Get the staff in on it. Creativity varies so much from person to person and a fresh set of ideas can breathe new life into a visual merchandising scheme. Even new staff are usually eager to help come up with new displays — and not only will you potentially open yourself to new and unique ideas, but this is a great way to create a sense of ownership and teamwork in your staff.

Putting it all together:

A lot of visual merchandising is, at heart, play. It takes time to get displays right. It takes a willingness to play around with the products and the signs until it looks good, because ultimately, making the products look attractive is what visual merchandising strives for.

Don’t be afraid to be creative. Visual merchandising thrives on creativity. These displays can be the heart and soul of a business. After all, if your items are pretty enough to buy, they’ll keep your customers coming back for more.

Below, I’ve attempted to identify the ten men who may be the greatest to ever compete in (and win) the yearly event.

1. Doyle Brunson – “Texas Dolly” is arguably the greatest card player alive today. With over 40 years of poker experience under his belt, Brunson was the first man to earn 1 million dollars in poker tournaments. He’s won 10 WSOP bracelets, and is one of only four men to have won back to back main events. He’s a true legend of the game.

2. Johnny Chan – Having won over 5 million dollars in tournament play, any serious poker player knows the name of “The Orient Express.” A 2002 Poker Hall of Fame inductee, Chan has 10 WSOP bracelets, tying him for the lead. A clip of his heads up win at the 1988 WSOP final has even been featured in the Matt Damon movie Rounders (in which Chan also made a cameo).

3. Phil Hellmuth Jr.- Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth is one of the best in the world. And just in case you’re unconvinced, he’s got 10 WSOP bracelets which should change your mind. In fact, he won his 10th in 2006, and his live tournament winnings exceed over 8 million dollars.

4. Men Nguyen – Known by many as simply “The Master,” Nguyen has won an impressive 6 WSOP bracelets in his career. He’s considered one of the most fearsome cash game players in the world, but he also donates a portion of his winnings to charity, even helping to build a kindergarten in his native Vietnam.

5. T.J. Cloutier – Having won over 8 million in tournament play, Cloutier is one of the most well-rounded gamblers in the game. Despite having never won the main event (but placing in the top 5 on 4 different occasions), this wily Texan can boast an impressive 6 tournament bracelets.

6. Erik Seidel – Having won over 5 million dollars in live tournament play, Seidel’s 1988 showdown against Johnny Chan was immortalized in the film Rounders. He also excels at backgammon and playing the stock market.

7. Johnny Moss – With 8 WSOP bracelets, “The Grand Old Man” competed in every WSOP tournament from its creation in 1970 until his death in 1995 (at 88 years of age). Because he was one of the true innovators of the game, he was a charter inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame.

8. Billy Baxter – With 7 WSOP bracelets (all in lowball events), Baxter is one of the greats of the game. He even took the United States government to court and won, securing equal tax status for those who make a living at gambling. 9. Jay Heimowitz – He’s attended the WSOP every year since 1975 and has won 6 bracelets in the process (not to mention 35 in-the-money finishes). What’s even more impressive is that his lack of full-time tour experience categorizes him as an amateur.

10. Chris Ferguson – Known by the nickname “Jesus” for his long hair and beard, Ferguson is one of the great card players of the modern era. He also happens to hold a Ph.D. in computer science. To date, he has 5 WSOP bracelets and has earned over 5 million dollars in tournament play.

What is Protopage?

Protopage allows you to create your own ajaxified web page after signing up. This article will show you how you can setup that AJAX page as your desktop and then conduct web searches right from your desktop, get weather information, get pictures, use stickies and more from your desktop.

How to make it your desktop?

Create a Protopage by visiting Protopage
Go to Start > Control Panel
Double Click Display
Select the Desktop tab from the top
Click on Customize Desktop button in the bottom left of this window
Then select the Web tab from the top

Click the New button
Enter your protopage URL in the window that opens and hit OK
Select Customize in the message window that will now pop up
Select Next
Select the first radio button “Only when I choose Synchronize from the Tools Menu” and select Next. Its upto you how you want your page to sync with your desktop. I picked the first option, feel free to experiment with the settings.
Does this site require a password? Select the Yes radio button and enter your protopage account login and password and click on Finish.
Hit OK in the message popup window and your protopage should now be your desktop.
Click on the protopage window on your desktop and use the maximize button in the top right just like in a browser window to make your protopage cover your entire desktop.
Enjoy customizing your Protopage. If your Protopage has search boxes, stickies enabled then you will be able to use them right from your desktop!

Did you know that dieting can be an eating disorder as serious as binge eating? Given the impact of body image on women’s consciousness, it is not surprising that eating disorder is becoming a critical problem in our age of affluence.

It is estimated that Bulimia affects between one and two per cent of women aged 15 to 40. Anorexia is estimated to affect between one and five teenage women in every 100,000, and the age at which most cases develop is 16 to 17. Most of the victims are females. Take a look at this confession from a young woman who is working on her recovery from an eating disorder. The excerpt comes from the book “It’s Not About Food”, written by Carol Emery Normandi M.S. MF.C.C. and Laurelee Roark M.A.CCHT, founders of Beyond Hunger Inc.

“I began dieting at 13 and started throwing up at 16, after I saw another friend do it. At first, it was just something I’d do now and then, after I’d eaten too much or when I felt too fat. But soon it seemed like I was eating too much too often and feeling fat all the time. In college, I started running to try to keep my weight down, but I couldn’t stop eating. The academic and social stress was just too much for me. I remember at night going from vending machine to vending machine, trying to fill this insatiable need to eat and then feeling so disgusted afterward I would find the nearest bathroom and throw up. Only then would I feel calm enough to sit down and study. Soon it became a way of life for me, and I was throwing up 3 to 4 times a day. I lived with hatred and disgust with myself for this behavior, but there was nothing I could do to stop it. I would begin everyday by telling myself that I was going on a diet and would stop eating and then wouldn’t have to throw up. I would end every day by hating myself for all the food I ate, for all the times I threw up and for how fat my body was. I was in the middle of a destructive, depressing cycle and couldn’t see my way out.” (Laura)

Laura’s situation typifies the hatred many women feel for their bodies. A cultural obsession with thinness has created a disquieting definition of the “perfect body.” Advertisements, TV, movies are proclaiming a standard that is genetically and physically impossible for 75% of female bodies. Most young girls grow up with a hatred of their bodies that is often manifested in depression, anger, isolation. Many resort to eating disorders to quell the emptiness they feel within.

Food issues are not about food; they are about the way women feel about themselves and their bodies. True recovery, say Carol and Laurelee in their book, “It’s Not About Food”, is “looking at your eating disorder as a friend instead of an enemy, letting it teach you who you are and what you want from life. It is healing your relationship not only with food, but with yourself and your spirit.”

Like Laura, Carol and Laurelee both grew up feeling that they were never thin enough; both were trapped in an eating disorder, an obsession with food and hatred for their own bodies which they felt were never perfect enough for acceptance. “Thinness was my god and I was on a spiritual quest. I sought refuge from pain in the churches of Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Dr. Atkins diets. I was looking outside myself to fix the ache inside me,” writes Laurelee.

Both worked through their despair to recovery by learning to embrace their bodies and tapping into their bodies’ wisdom. The result is not only their ability to stabilize and maintain normal weight and eating behavior for several years now but also “Beyond Hunger Inc.”, a non-profit organization they founded to help women who are desperate about the severity of their eating disorders. Using workshop techniques that help women break the cycle of vicious eating by going deep within their bodies’ wisdom, Carol and Laurelee have turned their personal journey into a universal one–to preserve the integrity of women’s body image by stripping away the artificial constructs of cultural pressures.

Their work will be a consolation for many who do not know how to begin. A woman in the depths of an eating disorder may think that there is no way out of her pain. But Carol and Laurelee assure them that “there is a cure and it is right inside each and every one of us.”
